The X Games are a series of extreme sports events, occuring twice a year; once for summer events, and once for winter. From January 20 to January 23, the 2022 Winter X Games will be held in Aspen, Colo., featuring events within the realms of snowboarding and skiing.
The event was established in 1995, when ESPN announced the first Extreme Games would be held in Rhode Island that June. Events that summer included bungy jumping, skateboarding, skysurfing, biking and water sports. With rousing success, ESPN decided to make the event an annual tradition instead the original bi-annual schedule.
The next year, the name was changed to the X Games. In 1997, the first winter X Games were held, featuring competitions including snowboarding, ice climbing, and snow mountain bike racing in Big Bear Lake, Calif.
The X Games have since spread out across the world, capturing international markets and fanning out into regional series. The X Games Asia began in 1998, holding only summer competitions until the inaugural Winter X Games Asia was planned to be held in Chongli, China in 2020. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic forced cancellation of the event.
The X Games also spread to Europe, Latin America and Oceania, with competitions being held in places such as Barcelona and Munich (2013), Mexico City (2007 and 2008), Tignes, France (2010-2013) and Sydney, Australia (2019).
The Winter X Games in the U.S. has been held in Aspen, Colo., since 2002. Competitors from around the globe are set to compete, with the first event (women’s snowboard slopestyle) kicking off at 10:30 AM MST on Friday, January 21, 2022.
Weather befitting a winter competition is set to impact Aspen during the competition weekend. On Friday, snow showers are expected during the first day of events, with total accumulation around one inch. Winds coming out of the northwest at 10 to 15 mph paired with the snow showers could cause some visibility issues for the athletes, but the minimal snow activity should peter out overnight. A crisp bluebird day is on the docket for Saturday, with sunny skies and a high temperature around 30 degrees providing perfect weather. The temperatures rise to just above freezing on Sunday, with an anticipated high of 33 degrees amid another beautifully clear sky.
