Wildfire season is still upon us and with that comes a need to be situationally aware. After preparing your wildfire action plan along with setting up your home and other personal property, you are ready to act when needed. Here are key things to remember when an active wildfire is in your area:

  • Act on your wildfire action plan: This will ensure your safety and keep you out of harms way. This will also allow firefighters and emergency responders to do their job.
  • Keep up to date with the news: Listen to local news or a weather radio for the latest updates and don’t return home unless officials say it is safe to return.
  • Once home, avoid driving if possible: Wildfires that went through the area may have caused downed electrical wires, weakened structures that could collapse like bridges, roads and sidewalks as well as caused fallen objects on roadways.
  • Be cautious when inspecting your home: There could be damaged power lines, gas leaks and structural damage that could collapse. Also avoid any buildings or homes in your neighborhood that still have flames, smoke or smell of gas.
  • Review how to use a generator: Always use a power generator outside and never inside your home. Generators used inside can cause carbon monoxide poising, which can lead to death.
  • Avoid using candles: If the power is out and you need light, avoid candles as a spark could ignite another fire due to leaking gas. Battery-powered flashlights are the preferred light source, but turn them on outside your home or building as the battery too could produce a spark.

Having these key tips in mind when returning home after a tragedy like a wildfire will help prevent another tragedy from occurring.
