The tropics in September continue to remain active, with the tenth named storm of the month coming to an end.
As of 5 p.m. AST, the remnant low pressure of Subtropical Depression Teresa was located near 34.4 N, 64.3 W, or about 150 miles north of Bermuda. The storm has weakened with sustained winds of 35 mph, and it was drifting east at 5 mph. Teresa’s minimum central pressure was 29.83 inches of mercury or 1010 mb.
Teresa was a short-lived storm, lasting only 24 hours between formation and degeneration. It will likely merge with a nearby cold front, with its moisture being swept northward toward eastern New England.
Teresa is hardly alone in the Atlantic tropics. The frontrunner of the group is Hurricane Sam, which is quickly intensifying as it moves westward across the central Atlantic. Sam will need to be monitored over the next week as it makes its way closer to the Eastern Seaboard. Meanwhile, another tropical disturbance is preparing to move westward from the African coast into the Atlantic. This disturbance will likely become organized late in the weekend or early next week, and could get the next name on the list, “Victor.”
Ten named storms in September ties the record for most storms in a month, set just last year. The formation of the season’s 19th named storm places this year into second place for earliest formation of a “T”-named storm, trailing only Teddy last year.
As October approaches, the northwest Caribbean and waters closer to the mainland U.S. are favored for tropical development. It is important to stay prepared this hurricane season as several tropical systems have already made landfall in the U.S. this year, including Hurricane Ida which devastated southeast Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane.
