A big autumn storm will start to pull away from the eastern this morning, bringing downpours to the Northeast as colder temperatures work into the eastern U.S. Another autumn blast will be heading for the Northern Plains as well.
Pockets of heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanying an eastbound cold front will continue to roll across the Northeast this morning. The rain will usher in colder temperatures, reminding everyone from northern Florida into the Mid-Atlantic that September is ending today and October begins on Thursday.
Areas of heavy rain remain possible across New England this morning. A couple inches of rain could produce localized flooding, especially in urban and poor drainage areas along the I-95 corridor. High winds will accompany the rain and could produce rough surf along the entire New England Coast.
Once the cold front moves off the coast, a shot of autumn air will settle deep into the South. Highs will only rise into the low 70s today as far south as the Southeast, with 60s in the eastern Great Lakes, the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.
If this was not enough, a second cold front will settle across the Northern Plains today before reaching the East Coast and South Thursday and Friday. Afternoon highs will only be in the 40s and 50s across the Northern Plains on Thursday, with the cold air making its way into the Midwest and Great Lakes on Friday. Even the lower Mississippi and Ohio valleys, interior South, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast will not climb out of the 60s on Friday.
The cooling trend will continue into the weekend and early next week.
