Cold Front To Deliver Storms To Eastern Half Of The U.S.
May 27, 2022
Updated By Weatherbug Meteorologist, Matt Mehallow
A bit of stormy weather is anticipated across the Midwest and western Carolinas this evening, bringing the threat for large hail and damaging winds. The threat will expand toward the Eastern Seaboard on Friday.
An upper-level disturbance tracking into the Ohio Valley and a cold front pushing eastward will lead to increased severe weather potential today. Southerly winds will transport warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico into the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley and Southeast. This warm southerly flow will undergo lifting along the front, triggering severe storms to pop up this afternoon and evening.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in place for western North Carolina and western South Carolina, including Charlotte and Hickory, N.C.
Severe weather will be possible again on Friday as the cold front continues to push eastward to the East Coast. Plentiful moisture and daytime heating could trigger scattered severe storms from the Carolinas to the Mid-Atlantic.
Meanwhile, a dynamic disturbance will move into the Pacific Northwest today. Instability will be low, but the potent storm system could still produce thunderstorms capable of damaging winds and hail. A Slight Risk has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for parts of northeastern Oregon, southeastern Washington, and Idaho.
Be sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning, should any be issued. A watch means that all the ingredients for severe weather to take place are there, while a warning indicates that the severe weather has already formed, and you should take action to keep your friends and family safe. Have multiple ways to receive warnings for your location and be sure to shelter in a basement or interior room within a well-built structure when severe weather approaches.
