Earth Day is here and there’s no better way to show Mother Earth that you care then by practicing earth-friendly living around the house.

Below are some ways you can help the planet be a better place right from your doorstep:
  • Avoid harmful chemicals or pollutants such as oil and trash from entering your storm drains. These drains are specifically for rainwater that is diverted back into streams and lakes, so whatever goes in will directly pollute.
  • Fire pits. To avoid any unsafe pollutants from entering the atmosphere, try to burn seasoned dry wood which offers a cleaner and safer burn. Never burn wood when there is an air quality alert because air pollution is higher during these times. Never burn green wood, plastic, garbage or trash from your yard as this could release toxic fumes into the environment.
  • Donate or recycle old electronics. Once you receive a gift, try donating your old items to someone who may be in need of it. If donation isn’t possible, then try following guidelines to properly recycle old electronics.
  • Have you ever tried composting? Composting is a great way to recycle organic trash such as food scraps and yard waste. Also, compost makes a great fertilizer for your yard, especially if you have plans to plant a tree in celebration of Earth Day.
  • Use reusable products. Instead of buying throwaway cups, maybe try investing in your own reusable water bottle that you can refill.
  • Look out for the recycle sign before you throw things in the trash. It takes two seconds to quickly glance at a product before throwing it away, and the effect of choosing to recycle will have lasting benefits on the planet. Recycling reduces waste in landfills, saves energy, and helps prevent pollution.
  • Use public transportation as an alternative to driving. Whether you live in a city or a suburb, taking the train or bus instead of driving to work will help reduce your carbon footprint. Why stop there? If you can, riding a bike to work can offer health rewards while reducing another car trip.
  • Avoid drive-through lines, instead go inside. It may be more of a hassle, but it is equally beneficial to the planet and your health. The longer your car is running, especially idling in a long drive-through line, the more air pollutants are released into the environment.
  • Remember to flip the switch when you leave a room. How many times have you walked out of a room and forgot to turn off the light? Well, try not to forget because it can save electricity, saving you on your monthly bill too.
These steps will point you in the right direction for clean, safe living. Not to mention the bonus that most of these steps will help reduce the strain on your wallet every month in unnecessary spending. So, this Earth Day and everyday, let’s try to make Mother Earth a safer environment for everyone.
