A line of thunderstorms has begun barreling into the Mid-Atlantic, eager to cause problematic weather today.
The catalyst for severe weather today is a cold front associated with a deep upper-level trough pushing through the Mid-Atlantic, which has led to an unstable atmosphere. The combination of this unstable atmosphere and strong winds aloft will cause thunderstorms to fire up today. Thunderstorms have already begun to organize and may continue to do so throughout the rest of the day.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for the Mid-Atlantic, hovering over coastal regions and as far inland as eastern West Virginia. Major cities included are Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. While damaging winds remain as the main threat, heavy rain, hail, and a tornado or two are also concerns.
As these storms continue to develop and push through, other watches and warnings may arise. As the late afternoon and evening approaches, thunderstorms may become more prominent. Storms are forecasted to push out into the Atlantic late into the night.
Be sure to download the WeatherBug smartphone application so you can check the latest watches and warnings. The app also includes Spark, which tells you where the nearest lightning is so you can quickly get to safety before a storm arrives.
