February Thaw Moves Into The Eastern U.S.

Warmer temperatures will work across most of the East today, giving the region a brief taste of spring.
 
As an area of high pressure drifts farther east toward Florida today, so will the warmer weather, with even parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast getting an early taste of spring. While unlikely to break records for late-February, the readings across much of the South and East will be running 10 to 15 degrees above-average. Though the thaw will be quite nice under a sunny sky, it will likely bring its own share of problems. Potholes in roads and sidewalks could become numerous as melting water creates crevices in the surfaces.
 
Cities such as Cincinnati, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia will enjoy a very mild late-February day with highs in the 50s and lower 60s. Likewise, locales such as Boston and New York, which have seen upwards of a foot of snow in recent weeks, will see a significant thaw with highs jumping into the 40s to near 50 degrees.
 
Unfortunately, the spring preview will be short-lived across the southern Plains and Texas. A new storm system moving out of the Rockies will dip south across the southern Plains Thursday into early Friday. This will bring a punch of rain and colder temperatures. Highs on Thursday will only be in the 30s and 40s across western Texas and the Panhandle, while the rest of Texas and the southern Plains will be in the 40s and 50s. This colder air will spread into the Southeast and into the East Coast on Friday as the storm system moves from the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Carolinas.

The weekend will be a see-saw as February ends and March begins. Much of the South and East will have a weekend with slightly above normal temperatures while Sunday brings pockets of colder temperatures across the Plains and Midwest.
