Crawling Cold Front Threatens Northeast With Flooding Storms
September 24, 2021
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologists
Thanks to a crawling cold front associated with a low pressure system over the Great Lakes, a line of heavy rain and thunderstorms is progressing across the Northeast.
One to 3 inches will drench eastern Pennsylvania into Delaware and New Jersey. This much rain falling in a short time will cause flooding near small creeks, streams and near urban centers. To make matters worse, the humid air mass could trigger a few gusty thunderstorms across the Delaware Valley tonight as well.
Flash Flood Watches and Warnings continue for portions of New Jersey, far eastern Pennsylvania, southern New York and eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut. Alerted cities include Washington, D.C., New York City and Hartford, Conn.
As the work week ends, the front will arrive in the New England region Friday. This will prompt showers and potentially a few gusty thunderstorms as well. Once the weekend commences, the low pressure will sweep towards the Hudson Bay allowing the eastern Great Lakes to dry out amid building high pressure.
If you approach a road covered in water, remember to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” It only takes 6 inches of water to cause a car to lose control or potentially stall. A foot of water will float many vehicles, while two feet of rushing water will carry most vehicles away, including SUVs and pickups.
