The first major precipitation event of the season will move across the northwestern U.S. this weekend.
Heavy rain moved into the coastal Northwest this morning. This activity will advance into northern California and Idaho through the afternoon and evening, eventually moving into the northern Rockies on Sunday.
The rain will continue in the coastal Northwest tonight through Sunday, resulting in storm total rainfall of 1 to 3 inches across the Cascades and Coastal Ranges from Washington down through Oregon and into northern California.
Spotty Flash Flood Watches are up between Washington and northern California, which mostly concern the heavy rain falling into recent burn scars, with mudslides possible.
Windy conditions will also be a concern across the Great Basin and northern Rockies this weekend, with widespread Red Flag Warnings across most the region. There are also High Wind Watches and Warnings in south-central Oregon, northeastern California, and southwestern Montana.
Make sure to avoid flooded roadways. It only takes a few inches of running water to render a vehicle dangerous to operate. Remember the phrase, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” should you come across floodwaters – the water is likely deeper than it appears.
