Heavy Rain In Eastern Texas, Louisiana Eases Today
September 20, 2019
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Mark Ellinwood
A welcome change of pace will take place today in eastern Texas and western Louisiana as rain and thunderstorms become more isolated.
In parts of eastern Texas to the east of Houston, rainfall reached 2-to-4 feet over a four day period. While a few spots that were hit the hardest through this morning could see an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain, most of the heavier rainfall will be shifted north to the Texas/Oklahoma border today.
Flash Flood Watches and Warnings remain around the greater Houston metro area. Significant flooding has been reported from Houston eastward to Beaumont, Texas, with rescues and evacuations.
A localized area of heavy rainfall is likely along the eastern Texas/Oklahoma border and into far western Arkansas today. Some spots could receive 3 to 6 inches of rain or more through tonight.
Remember, never drive across flooded roads. The water could be deeper than you think. Always remember that it is best to "Turn Around, Don't Drown" when coming across a flooded area.
Imelda’s moisture will erase the rainfall deficits along the Texas Gulf Coast. Going into the storm, Houston was 3.50 inches below average for the year while Galveston was almost 8 inches behind average. The rain will ease the moderate drought conditions in southeast Texas and help the moderate to severe drought growing in southeast Oklahoma later this week.
