A waterlogged storm system will continue to soak the Northeast through tonight, with a few more storms rolling across southern Florida. Things will be different for the interior Northeast where a wintry mix will lead to difficult travel.
A large storm system stretching from southern Florida to the Northeast brought a soggy day to the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. This system will slide off the coast, bringing lingering rain to the Northeast and a few storms across southern Florida through this evening. This system will accelerate of the coast tonight and early Friday, sweeping the precipitation offshore. However, colder air on the system’s back side will produce a wintry mix before colder and drier arrives on Friday.
Total rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is likely by the time the storm departs across New England. These totals, mostly falling in a short time, as well as across a formidable snowpack across eastern and southern New England, could lead to flash and urban flooding, especially in areas of poor drainage or where storm drains may be overwhelmed by snowmelt and run-off. Flash Flood Watches and Flood Watches stretch from New Jersey into southern New England. Remember, if you approach a flooded roadway, it is best to, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Winter Storm Advisories remain in place across Upstate New York. Even without advisories, a quick burst of snow and wintry mix will be possible across New England early Friday.
Meanwhile, strong, gusty winds will likely cause some power outages from falling trees, especially across southeastern New England and across Dow’easter Maine. For many of these locations, sustained wind will reach 15 to 30 mph with occasional gusts spiking at 40 to 60 mph. Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings extend across interior New England.
