Just as one storm is departing the U.S, a new one plans to blitz across the south-central Plains tonight into Thursday. Slippery, dangerous roads will be an issue into the latter part of the week.
A deep, cold air mass sliding southeastward from the Rockies into the central Plains has collided with moist flow from the Gulf of Mexico. On one side of the system, warmer, humid air has led to downpours across the Arklatex, with 1 to 3 inches of rainfall expected. Meanwhile, the colder air on the northern flank of the system has prompted winter storm conditions for the southern Rockies into the central Plains.
Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings have been posted for central Kansas, northern Oklahoma and the northern tip of the Texas Panhandle. Dodge City and Garden City, Kan., are expected to receive 1 to 3 inches of snow, but up to 8 inches of accumulation is possible in Woodward and Beaver, Oklahoma.
The new snowy weather will last through Thursday, slowly transitioning into the Mississippi and Ohio valley by the weekend. On the heels of a previous snowstorm, this new system will only add to the snow troubles across the Great Lakes.
