March 23-- Mar. 23--There's a chance you'll be able to see the Northern Lights tonight in Western New York.
"The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has indicated that a Coronal Mass Ejection from the sun is expected to strike Earth and touch off aurora borealis (and australis) displays that may reach as far south as Pennsylvania in the Northeastern United States," the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium at SUNY Buffalo State College said in an invitation to the public and media to try to observe the special event.
The best time to try to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights is between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday, planetarium presenters said. Planetarium staff will be in the parking lot of Buckham Hall (Lot R-12 off Rockwell Road) during those hours to answer questions.
National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Mitchell said it should be clear tonight. He suggested getting as far away from any lighting tonight for the best shot at seeing the Northern Lights.
"You would probably want to head out to Olcott or somewhere like Java Center. Away from the city. Away from any light. You want pitch-black," Mitchell said.
