A cold front careening to the East Coast will trigger a few big storms as the day wears on. Gusty winds and large hail are the main threats.
The front is pushing across western Pennsylvania early this afternoon and on its way to the Mid-Atlantic Coast. Pockets of warm temperatures will develop ahead of the front and will lead to isolated to widely scattered dangerous thunderstorms. Hail larger than golf balls and wind gusts exceeding 57 mph are possible in a few storms, best chance southeast of Interstate 95 in Maryland.
Nonetheless, residents from Philadelphia to Fredericksburg, Va., should keep a close eye to the sky. Thunderstorms will quickly fade and push off the Mid-Atlantic coast after sunset.
Meanwhile, a separate pocket of gusty thunderstorms could occur ahead of a dry line separating dry air from humid air in western Texas. Abilene, Austin, San Antonio and Midland, Texas, could see a gusty, hail-producing storm later this afternoon or this evening.
