After flooding hit parts of Arizona, Colorado and Florida earlier this week, another storm brought record flooding to the southern Appalachians. Heavy rain sent a river over its banks along the Georgia–Tennessee border early Thursday, November 5\. Water reached the roofs of some homes, and emergency crews carried out dozens of rescues.

Two neighboring towns felt the impact on opposite sides of the state line. In McCaysville, Georgia, the police chief reported more than 30 water rescues. In Copperhill, Tennessee, the river gauge reached a record 18.05 feet Thursday morning. The river that runs through both towns is called the Toccoa in Georgia and the Ocoee in Tennessee.

The rainfall map shows the broader **72-hour period ending at noon on November 5**, including the overnight storms. It shows an estimated **10.24 inches at one location near the Georgia–Tennessee line**.

Some of the heaviest rain fell upstream of the flooded downtowns. The Tennessee Valley Authority reported that 8 to 10 inches fell overnight in parts of the north Georgia mountains. As that water drained into creeks and then into the river, it carried the flooding downstream.

For anyone who lives or drives near a river, that upstream rain matters. The rain can stop where you are while the river is still rising. Before heading out after a storm, check local road closures. If water covers your route, turn around. Even a familiar stretch of pavement can wash out beneath floodwater.
