Even as the calendar flips to June and the beginning of Meteorological Summer, the Northeast and Great Lakes will feel more like the middle of spring. A few colder spots could even see a touch of frost.
Cool Canadian high pressure is moving across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast, bringing refreshingly cool temperatures into the Northeast and Midwest.
Temperatures have only reached 59 degrees in Canton, Ohio, with middle 50s also common across the New York Southern Tier. Boston has topped out at 61 degrees, while Baltimore and Washington have been scraping the 70-degree mark today.
These temperatures are all 10 to 20 degrees below average for the last day of May. This is a far cry from Friday’s highs, which were in the upper 80s. Couple that with sunshine and low humidity and the only way to describe the weather is “perfect.”
Overnight readings will be quite refreshing as well, as the mercury falls into the 40s nearly everywhere. Some of the coolest spots the next couple of days will see overnight low drop into the 30s, which could allow frost to develop on outdoor plants.
Frost advisories are looking likely for the highest elevations of the interior Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Monday morning. If you have any outdoor plants, be sure to bring them inside or if you can’t move them, cover the plants with a loose sheet.
The refreshing weather will be short-lived as the high pressure pushes off the East Coast as the calendar ticks a little deeper into June. The clockwise flow of air around the high pressure will ensure humidity surges back into the Midwest and East. Highs by the middle of the week will be back into the 80s, which is above-average. In the meantime, enjoy the rare treat of dry, comfortable June weather!
