Lorenzo has become an extra-tropical cyclone though it has not been released of its hurricane status. It is still expected to bring heavy winds and rain to Ireland and the UK late Thursday and Friday.
As of 11 a.m. AST (EDT), Lorenzo was located near 44.4 N and 25.8 W, or about 945 miles west-southwest of Cork, Ireland. Lorenzo’s packing maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir - Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Lorenzo will continue to generate large, dangerous swells across much of the Atlantic Basin. Atlantic Canada, the U.S. East Coast, Bahamas, parts of the Greater and Lesser Antilles, the Azores and parts of the Europe coast will experience these swells that could lead to life-threatening surf and rip currents.
All hurricane warnings and tropical cylcone warnings have been dropped and no more are expected to be issued.
By Thursday, Lorenzo will transition from a hurricane to a powerful extra-tropical system while making a sharp right turn toward Ireland and the United Kingdom. It will likely produce gale-force to hurricane-force winds and battering waves late Thursday into Friday.
In a normal Atlantic tropical season, nine named storms and seven hurricanes have formed by the beginning of October. So far this year, 12 named storms and five hurricanes have formed in the Atlantic basin. Two named storms and one hurricane normally form later in October.
