The storm system that is dropping beneficial rains across parts of the Southwest will progress eastward to end the workweek, delivering the possibility of flooding across the Lower Mississippi Valley.
An unusual pattern has set up across the West, with a strong high pressure anchored over the Great Basin and an upper-level low digging across the Southwest. This is bringing Pacific moisture onshore, and will continue to be squeezed out across New Mexico and Texas.
As the low pressure from the Southwest moves east, a cold front will be diving south into the Lower Mississippi Valley before slowing to a crawl. Ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will be pulled northward and multiple rounds of moderate to heavy rain will develop this morning and afternoon.
The heaviest rain will stretch from east Texas into southern Georgia where widespread rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected and as much as 3 inches of rain could fall across eastern Louisiana and western Mississippi.
Flooding is a leading cause of weather-related fatalities with more than half of flood-related casualties occurring in automobiles when attempting to cross high water. Just six inches of fast-flowing water can sweep a grown adult away while twelve inches can overtake small cars. It is never safe to drive or walk through floodwaters, always remember to turn around don't drown.
