Stormy Skies Threaten Father's Day Plans in Plains and Mid-Atlantic
June 17, 2019
By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Alexa Maines
The weekend is ending on a bit of a stormy note, as a stubborn cold front continues to produce rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms from the Plains to the Mid-Atlantic.
Disturbances moving along the cold front are drawing together cooler and drier air from the north and warm and humid air from the south, causing them to be mixed and creating waves of strong to severe thunderstorms.
Severe Thunderstorm Watches are in place across much of Kentucky and southern West Virginia, including Louisville and Lexington, Ky., Huntington and Charleston, W.Va., and Evansville, Ind.
These storms already have a history of producing wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, and tonight will be no exception. As the storms race across the Bluegrass State, damaging gusts are possible, along with the potential for golf ball sized hail.
Another area of thunderstorms continues along the tail end of the front across central and eastern Texas. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in place here through the middle of the night, including San Antonio, Austin and Victoria, Texas. Wind gusts to 70 mph and hail of golf ball to baseball size are the primary threats with these storms.
Periods of heavy rain are anticipated for these locations and a few spots could see as much as 2 inches of rain overnight. Remember, if you encounter a water-covered roadway, be sure to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” because the water could be much deeper than it appears.
As thunderstorms develop, make sure you know the difference between a watch and a warning if your city falls under any alerts that are issued. A watch means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop and a warning means dangerous weather is imminent or already occurring.
