Wind Gusts Tonight
Strong, gusty winds will target much of the Northeast into the Mid-Atlantic tonight into Thursday morning.

A strong low pressure system moved briskly across the northern Great Lakes earlier today and will move off the New England coast by early Thursday morning. Scattered showers will accompany this system tonight, with high elevation snow likely tonight as colder air surges southward on the backside of this low pressure system.

As high pressure quickly builds into the eastern U.S. on Thursday, powerful wind gusts are expected to last through Thursday morning.

Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph will be common from the central Appalachians northward through much of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and southern Maine. This includes cities such as Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Buffalo, N.Y. and Portland, Maine.

As the low pressure system strengthens early Thursday morning, wind gusts across southern New England could reach upwards of 45 to 60 mph. This includes Providence, R.I., and Boston.

Numerous Wind Advisories, High Wind Warnings, and High Wind Watches are in place throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast to account for the expected strong wind gusts.

As the low pressure system moves away later Thursday morning, winds will gradually ease throughout the day.

Be sure to secure any loose outdoor items before the wind hits! The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time.
