How much rain can fall in one place in just a single day? From tropical downpours to slow-moving thunderstorms, every state has experienced extreme rainfall, and some totals are hard to believe.

Using data from NOAA's State Climate Extremes Committee, we're looking at the all-time 24-hour rainfall records across all 50 states.

## Hawaii Holds the National Record

The U.S. record belongs to Hawaii, where an incredible 49.69 inches of rain fell at Waipā Garden on Kauai on April 14–15, 2018.

Moist air was forced upward by the island's steep terrain, helping thunderstorms repeatedly dump rain over the same area. The resulting flooding damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and left communities cut off for weeks.

Before Hawaii claimed the record, Alvin, Texas, held the title following Tropical Storm Claudette in July 1979, when approximately 42–43 inches of rain fell in 24 hours.

Even typically dry states have experienced extreme rainfall. Arizona's record stands at 11.4 inches, while Utah's is 5.1 inches.

## Could Florida's Recent Flooding Set New Records?

Extreme rainfall recently brought dangerous flooding to parts of Central and East Florida.

On November 1–2, 2026, preliminary National Weather Service reports showed 24.10 inches near Malabar, 20.60 inches near Palm Bay, and 19.80 inches near Melbourne Beach. These were storm-total measurements covering more than 24 hours, not necessarily official single-day records.

The flooding prompted a Flash Flood Emergency for parts of Brevard County, including West Melbourne and Palm Bay.

## Why Rainfall Records Can Change

Some extreme rainfall events take time to verify. NOAA's State Climate Extremes Committee reviews potential records before officially adding them to the historical database.

Kansas's record is currently under review, and recent events like Florida's flooding may also warrant further evaluation.
