Turbulent winds whipped up a ‘fire whirl’ on Sunday, July 14, as the Powerline wildfire swept across Grant County, Washington, local media reported.
The 5,000 acre wildfire threatened a number of homes and business, according to officials cited by local media. On Monday, the blaze remained 0% contained.
Video posted by Grant County’s Fire District 13 shows a “fire whirl” amidst the active fire on Sunday. These tornado-like columns of flame develop due to the combination of “intense rising heat and turbulent wind conditions,” firefighters said.
