After a busy week full of snow, ice and frigid weather, the weekend arrives with a spell of quieter weather spreading across more of the U.S.
Saturday
A large high pressure will expand across the Central and Eastern U.S., pushing away the winter storm that brought an icy and snowy mess to the South and East to close out the work week. This will result in a sunny Saturday from the high Plains to the Atlantic Seaboard.
The return of sunshine will start a gradual warm-up across the Plains. In fact, Texas and the southern Plains will have afternoon highs in the 40s and low 50s, with the central Plains being in the 30s. It will still be cold across the northern Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Mid-South, Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, with highs in the 20s and low 30s common. The Southeast will be in the 50s with Florida being in the 60s.
The Northwest, Intermountain West and Rockies will have to contend with scattered batches of mountain snow across the Cascades, northern Sierra and the northern and central Rockies. Otherwise, the West will be calm and sunny with highs ranging from spring-like upper 70s in the Southwest and southern California to 30s and 40s throughout the Northwest, northern Rockies and Mountain West. California and the Great Basin will be in the 50s and 60s Saturday.
Sunday
The gradual warm-up from the depths of the recent Arctic outbreak continues across the Central and Eastern U.S. Sunday. Texas, The Deep South and Southeast will start to thaw and begin recovery as a sun-filled day sends afternoon highs climbing into the 50s and low 60s Sunday. Just to the north, it will still be cold with highs in the 40s across the southern and central Plains, Mid-South, Carolinas and the Mid-Atlantic.
The Northern Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes will also start to thaw as afternoon temperatures rise into the 30s, with a few spots in the Dakotas hitting the 40-degree mark. However, a quick-moving system rolling across the central Plains and Midwest could bring a burst of rain or wet snow.
The Northwest will remain locked in an active pattern with a new Pacific system moving ashore later in the day. This will bring an increased chance of rain along the Northwest Coast, with the Cascades, intermountain region and the northern Rockies receiving a fresh batch of higher-elevation snow. Temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s along the coast, with colder 30s found in the snowy higher elevations.
California, the Great Basin, Southwest and southern and central Rockies will have a quiet and sunny Sunday. The high temperatures will range from the 40s across the southern and central Rockies and northern Great Basin to the 50s and 60s across northern and central California and the southern Great Basin. Southern California and the Desert Southwest will be the Western warm spot with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s.
