April 14, 2021
UPDATED By Weatherbug Meteorologist, Mark Ellinwood
Most of the central U.S. will remain 10 to 20 degrees below normal today as a cold air mass settles in for an extended stay.
Cold Canadian air will be locked in across the nation's center through the end of the week as a pair of high pressure systems drop southward through the Plains.
Subfreezing temperatures in the north-central U.S. has prompted freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories across the southeastern Nebraska, southern Iowa, northern Missouri, and west-central Illinois, where the growing season has already started.
Daytime highs will only reach the 30s and 40s across the entire Upper Midwest and for cities like Minneapolis and Chicago today. In addition, lows Thursday morning are expected to drop into the 30s across the Middle Mississippi Valley, which could deliver frost and damage to plants for cities like Kansas City, Mo., and St. Louis, where the growing season has already begun.
The cold air will be accompanied by snow in parts of the Rockies today through Thursday. Up to a few inches of snow across the lower elevations of the central Rockies, with higher accumulations up to a foot or more in the higher terrain of Wyoming, northern Utah, and northern Colorado. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings cover the higher terrain as well as eastern Wyoming.
By Thursday, the chilly air should reach the East Coast, where daytime highs in the 40s and 50s will be about 15 degrees below average for many locations. Temperatures will even be cold enough to support flurries in the eastern Great Lakes and northern Appalachians early Friday. Rain and snow will fall across the Northeast later on Friday.
A second shot of cold air will spread across the Plains, Midwest, and East this weekend and early next week.
