2026 Hurricane Season Is About to Break a Record

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is on the verge of making history, but probably not for the reason you’d expect.

So far, the Atlantic has produced five tropical storms but zero hurricanes. If that continues for just a few more days, 2026 will set a new record for the latest first hurricane formation of the season in the satellite era.

The Record to Beat

The date to watch is September 11.

Twice in the satellite era, the Atlantic’s first hurricane of the season did not form until September 11. Hurricane Gustav reached hurricane strength on September 11, 2002, while Hurricane Humberto became the first hurricane of the 2013 season on September 11.

If the Atlantic makes it through September 11 without producing a hurricane, 2026 will set a new record for the latest first hurricane formation since the satellite era began in 1966.

With no hurricane development expected over the next few days, that record is increasingly likely to be broken.

What Does On Record Mean

When we say "on record" here, we're talking about the satellite era, beginning in 1966.

Before satellites routinely monitored the Atlantic, tropical storms and hurricanes could be missed, particularly if they remained far out at sea and never affected land or ships. Satellite observations gave meteorologists a much more complete picture of tropical activity across the basin.

That's why comparing hurricane seasons during the satellite era provides a more consistent look at when storms formed.

What makes this even more unusual is the timing. We're approaching the climatological peak of Atlantic hurricane season around September 10, when tropical activity is historically at its highest.

In other words, we're reaching the heart of hurricane season without a single storm reaching hurricane strength. This is not a surprise, as we know El Nino greatly impacts our hurricane season here in the Atlantic Basin by suppressing tropical cyclone activity.

Does This Mean Hurricane Season Is Over

Definitely not.

Atlantic hurricane season continues through November 30, leaving plenty of time for hurricanes to develop.
