A dose of winter weather persists this evening over the Northeast, leading to power outages and travel headaches.
This unsettling wintry weather is stemming from an area of low pressure that is slowly moving across coastal New England. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect over far northern New Jersey, eastern New York and the southern half of New England. Snow totals ranging from two to six inches have been reported over southern parts of New Hampshire and Vermont, extending into central to western Massachusetts.
Meanwhile, moderate to heavy icing has taken place over northeastern Pennsylvania to northern New Jersey and southeastern New York. Freezing rain amounts ranging from 0.2 to 0.4 inch have led to several thousand power outages across northwestern New Jersey. Another pocket of ice accumulation ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 inch is present over northern Rhode Island to north-central Connecticut. With winds expected to pick up tomorrow morning, these areas with icing still on trees and power poles could see additional power outages develop.
This same winter storm buried the Rocky Mountains over the weekend, adding to the snow pack and helping the ski resorts. The highest peaks reported 2 to 3 feet of snow, while mainly 6 to 12 inches of new snow fell across the rest of the mountains. In the Midwest, as much as 2 to 6 inches of snow fell from Kansas City, Mo. eastward to Saint Louis and Indianapolis.
