Brrr! Be Prepared for Extreme Cold

Whether you’re a Heat Miser or Snow Miser, in the words of Ned Stark, “Winter is Coming.” Meteorological winter starts in December and ends in February. With December just a few weeks away, now is a good time to prepare for the cold.

Most people know how to take care of themselves during frigid months of winter, but do you know how to take care of your car and home? Not sure where to start? Below we have compiled a list on how to winterize your home, lawn, and car.

Winterize Your Home:
  • Clean Gutters
  • Insulate Exposed Pipes like a Backflow Preventer
  • Turn Off Water and Drain Outdoor Spigots
  • Disconnect and Store Garden Hoses
  • Caulk and Weather Strip Doors and Windows
  • Inspect and Clean Chimney
  • Check and Insulate Attic
  • Install and Test Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
  • Gather Supplies like Shovels and Salt
Winterize Your Lawn:
  • Rake Leaves and Debris
  • Aerate and Dethatch Lawn
  • Overseed Lawn
  • Apply Winter Fertilizer and Weed Control
  • Add Mulch to Cover Plant Beds
  • Turn Off Water and Blow Out Irrigation System
Winterize Your Car:
  • Switch to Winter Tires and Check Tire Pressure
  • Check and Replace Windshield Wipers
  • Keep Washer Fluid Full
  • Keep Gas Tank at Least Half Full
  • Keep the Following in your Trunk:
    • Jacket, First Aid Kits, Jumper Cables, Ice Scraper, Flares, Water, Food, Sand, and Shovel
