"Did You Feel It" Map of the quake (USGS)
An earthquake struck northern California this afternoon. While occurring in a rural area of the Sierra Nevada, its impact has been felt well away from the center.

The quake, measuring magnitude 5.5, was centered near the eastern end of Lake Almanor in Plumas County, Calif. This is about 100 miles northwest of Carson City, Nev., and 180 miles north-northeast of San Francisco. The tremblor occurred at about 4:19 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Reports are still being received by the US Geological Survey, although light shaking was reported as far away as Stockton and San Francisco. Fortunately, the earthquake was centered in the northern Sierra Nevada, with few population centers near the epicenter. Thus far, there has been no reports of damage or injuries from this quake.

Numerous aftershocks have already been recorded in the time since this quake, and this is to be expected over the next couple of days. However, it is highly unlikely – less than 6% chance – that this quake was a precursor to a similarly-sized or bigger quake.
