Has vacation or extreme heat gotten in the way of working out the last several months? Cooler temperatures in the fall offers many opportunities for a morning work-out. There are a few things to remember before you head out the door to shed those pounds in the cooler weather.
- New shoes. Old walking or running shoes can quickly cause leg and back injuries. The general rule of thumb is that if you run or walk 10 miles a week, it`s best to replace your shoes once a year.
- Maintain your exercise equipment. Bicycles, rollerblades, or treadmills should be inspected, cleaned, or repaired. Things like exercise balls and yoga mats should be thoroughly cleaned as they can harbor mold and bacteria while being stored in the garage or basement.
- Prepare for less daylight. Be smart and safe while maintaining your workout routine as the daylight hours shrink in the fall. If you are accustomed to working out at the same time every day and darkness occurs during those hours later in the season, be prepared to wear a reflective vest and carry a flashlight. This is especially important if you run or walk where there is considerable traffic. If you are cycling, be sure to add a light to your helmet or bicycle.
- Enjoy the cooler fall temperatures and the fresh air the season offers. Finding a trail that runs through a forest in a local park could also be exciting in the fall as the leaves are changing colors. Just be careful of fallen leaves that could leave the path slippery. Just getting outside and moving can make a world of difference in your health.
- Make small efforts to work more fitness into your day. Instead of watching television after work, record your favorite shows and go out for a short walk while there is ample evening daylight. Pick up an enjoyable hobby that keeps you moving, like bowling or dancing. Also try to sneak in more daily exercise by doing little things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking at the far end of the lot at work.
