A stationary front and plenty of moisture aloft will produce multiple rounds of heavy thunderstorms across Texas and New Mexico.
Flood Watches are currently in effect for southeastern New Mexico, a small portion of the Oklahoma Panhandle, and central and western Texas. Cities include San Antonio, Austin, Amarillo, and San Angelo in Texas, and Carlsbad and Roswell in New Mexico.
Around 2 to 4 inches is forecast today through the overnight, but some local areas could pick up 5 to 8 inches. This will cause flash flooding today, thanks to the already saturated soils from recent precipitation.
With the front moving at a snail’s pace southward, there could be additional flooding problems on Monday in southern Texas, as well. Drier weather conditions will arrive for much of the state on Tuesday as high pressure builds in.
If you are out and about, be sure to keep an eye to the sky and look out for rapidly changing cloud coverage. If you encounter flooded roadways, remember to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” In some cases, the thunderstorm that leads to flooding at your location could be many miles away.
