Major Snowstorm Hits The Southeastern U.S.

A developing coastal storm will mainly hit the Carolinas and surrounding areas through this weekend, with lesser effects along the coastal areas of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Light snow will begin to spread over much of the Tennessee Valley into the southern Appalachians this afternoon, reaching southern Virginia and the Carolinas this evening into tonight. The snow will increase in intensity across southern Virginia and the Carolinas Saturday morning and afternoon as the coastal storm begins to develop and strengthen. At its peak late Saturday, parts of the central and eastern Carolinas could be under near blizzard conditions as winds increase.
The heaviest snow likely occurs from northern and central South Carolina into most of North Carolina and southern Virginia. Here, snow totals of 3 to 6 inches are likely, with the potential for localized amounts up to 10 inches! Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for southeastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee, southern West Virginia, most of southern Virginia, the Carolinas, and northern and eastern Georgia.
As the system accelerates northeastward, the coastal areas of the Mid-Atlantic and New England will mainly be concerned with breezy to windy conditions, coastal flooding and coastal erosion Saturday night through Monday morning. These areas will also see little in the way of snow accumulation, with the exception of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts where 1 to 4+ inches of snow is possible on Sunday.
