It’s heating up outside, the kids are out of school, and thunderstorms are lighting up the evening sky. Which can only mean one thing… Summer is here! Before going on a road trip or a drive to the beach or mountains to cool off, make sure your car won’t rain on your plans.

Most vehicles break down in the summer months because of coolant and engine overheating issues. If you haven’t had your car’s coolant serviced in 5 years, this should be done now to ensure its anti-corrosion and thermal capabilities remain at peak performance. The fan belt is another important part that helps prevent overheating. It is located under the hood of your car and should be securely in place, without any cracks. Additionally, be sure to check your radiator fluid level and inspect for leaks. The radiator cap keeps coolant or water circulating in the radiator and raises its boiling point to prevent it from overheating. If your car’s radiator cap is more than 5-years old, it will need to be replaced to avoid cracks and damage.

Other important tips to keep your car ready to hit the road include changing the oil regularly, and having the headlights, windshield wipers, and air conditioning checked. This will help to avoid any unwanted pit stops or unexpected problems on the go.

It’s also a good idea to have a plan while driving long distances. Whether it’s stopping for gas, food, or a bathroom break, have a plan so you don’t get caught in the middle of nowhere. Likewise, a summer emergency kit is always a good idea in case of emergency. This kit should include food, water, phone chargers, sunscreen, and a reflective blanket (for shade), among other items.

Following these steps will help you and your car be ready for the road this summer!
