Unbearable Heat Lingers Over The West
August 25, 2025 at 12:00 PM EDT
By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Alyssa Robinette

Record-breaking heat will continue over the western U.S. this week.
A strong high pressure system that has settled over the West will prolong the heat wave for several more days. As it does this, temperatures across the region will reach dangerous levels. Cities including Grangeville, Idaho, Portland, Bend and Pendleton, Ore., and Seattle, Olympia, and Tacoma, Wash., will feel the impact of the hot conditions.
Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories stretch across four states which include California, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
We will see some record high temperatures in jeopardy today as this ridge of high pressure hovers over the region. Nineties will be felt as far north as Idaho and eastern Washington state, while numerous spots along and west of the Rockies will see the mercury climb into triple digits. Portland, Ore., could break the daily high record today with max temperatures soaring into the mid-90s. Salem, Ore., and Spokane, Yakima, and Olympia, Wash., could also break their daily high temperature record today. In fact, hundreds of daily temperature records were broken across the West over the last several days including 119 degrees recorded in Havasu, Az.!
Fortunately for some, temporary relief will be felt since scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop during the afternoon and evening hours. The flipside to that is lightning strikes igniting fires in the driest areas. There are also Flash Flood Watches for parts of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and parts of the Desert Southwest.
If you must go outdoors, prepare by staying hydrated and keep a watchful eye for any signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Wear the right clothing, such as loose-fitting, lightweight and breathable fabrics, and take many breaks within a cool and shaded area.
Make sure to take extra precautions for children and the elderly as they are more susceptible to heat-related illness. Never leave children or animals alone in a locked vehicle as it can become dangerous and potentially fatal.
