Latest On Blizzard: DC Area Highways Close

A major winter storm producing blizzard conditions is blasting the Mid-Atlantic. Significant snow, ice and blizzard conditions will continue to cause major headaches through early Sunday.

Here is a look at travel impacts and other important information about the storm. Check back often for the latest updates.

Storm-Related News
  • A 60-year old man in Fort Washington, Md., died after suffering a heart attack shoveling snow.
  • At least 17 people have died in the East Coast blizzard.
Travel Impacts
  • Interstate 270 has been closed in its entirety. Interstate 70 has been closed east of Hagerstown, Md.
  • MTA, New York City's mass transit, is only running subway service; all-above ground train and bus routes have been suspended.
  • Washington’s Reagan National and Dulles International are closed through Sunday, with Philadelphia International closed today. All flights cancelled.
  • According to Flightaware.com, more than 4,400 flights have been cancelled in the U.S., a majority of them going through the airports on the East Coast affected by the blizzard. 
  • Most major airlines are waiving fees for passengers flying into/out of most airports in path of major storm. This allows passengers the ability to change travel plans ahead of blizzard. Contact airline for more information about flight status and rebooking tickets.
  • Amtrak has modified train schedules on the busy Northeast Corridor between Washington and Boston with some cancellations on long-range services originating in the Mid-Atlantic.
  • Washington’s Metro subway and bus service shut down Friday night at 11 p.m. and is closed through Sunday.
  • Philadelphia's SEPTA subway is shutdown, with the exception of the Market-Frankford and Broad Street lines.
Weather Warnings:
  • Blizzard Warnings are in effect along I-95 corridor from northern Virginia to New York City and Long Island, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Frederick, Md., Wilmington, Del., Philadelphia, Trenton and Newark, N.J. A warning is also issued for Block Island, R.I., and Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.
  • Winter Storm Warnings extend from western North Carolina and northern South Carolina northeast into Virginia, West Virginia, southern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
​Cancellations & Closings: 
  • Three sports events have been postponed by the storm. Two in Washington, D.C. - the Capitals/Ducks hockey game tonight, and Wizards/Jazz basketball game today; as well as the Celtics/Sixers basketball game in Philadelphia today.
  • Frederick County Schools in Frederick, Md., will be closed on Monday.
Power Outages
  • Carolinas: Duke Energy is reporting more than 3,200 outages affecting more than 100,000 customers. 
  • Virginia: Dominion Reports less than 1,000 customers without power, down from around 8,800 customers earlier today.
  • Maryland:  BGE reports 147 customers without power.
  • Washington, D.C. and its suburbs: PEPCO reports only 14 outages affecting 900 customers.
  • Sussex County, Del.: Delmarva Power reports more than 9,000 customers without power earlier today. Now down to less than 1,000. 
  • Southern New Jersey: Atlantic City Power reports more than 33,000 customers without power. This is an improvement from the nearly 38,000 around midday.
  • Central New Jersey: Jersey Central Power and Light reporting around 15,000 customers without power.
  • Long Island: PSE&G is reporting about 2,600 customers without power.
