Snowfall forecast through early Saturday
Blizzard conditions will last one more day over North Dakota while parts of the mountain west will see wintry weather today as well. Travel will be difficult, if not impossible, for many.

A potent low pressure system will slowly spin over southern Ontario today. Temperatures will be cold enough behind this low pressure to lead to occasional light to moderate snow showers from eastern Montana and the Dakotas to as far east as northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin through late in the day. In addition to the snow, high winds will accompany this storm system, creating wind-whipped snow and blizzard conditions.

Snow totals thus far across eastern Montana and North Dakota have been staggaring. Many locations have have seen more than 20 inches of snow, including nearly 30 inches in Minot, N.D.

Another disturbance coming off the Pacific will produce snowfall from the northern Sierra Nevadas in California to the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming and Colorado today. Two to 5 inches of snow will be possible by this afternoon in lower elevation areas but 6 to 12 inches or more will be found along mountain peaks and ridges. Interstaes I-80, 84, and 70 may be hazardous through tonight and into Friday morning. Wind gusts near 40-50 mph will also be common for the next couple days in higher elevation areas and through passes.

A Blizzard Warning has been issued for eastern Montana, North Dakota and northwestern South Dakota. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are also in effect for northern California, central and southern Oregon, northern Nevada, parts of southern Idaho, western Wyoming, north-central Colorado, north-central Wyoming and eastern Montana eastwards across the Dakotas to northwestern Minnesota.

High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories are also in effect across portions of the Dakotas into west-central Minnesota, where sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph and wind gusts up to 70 mph are possible.

Stay ahead of this expansive late-season winter storm with WeatherBug. It’s never too early to have a supply kit packed in case of inclement weather. A simple kit including a weather radio, water, blankets, batteries and non-perishable food items will go a long way in the event of a power outage. It’s always best to avoid travel in rough weather as the roads will be dangerous.
