Forecast Track of Tropical Storm Ernesto
Tropical Storm Ernesto continues to move away from Bermuda but it may become a threat for beaches along the East Coast.

As of 5 a.m. AST, Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near 34.6 N and 63.0 W, or about 690 miles south of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and 980 miles southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada. It was moving north-northeast at 9 mph and had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph. The minimum central pressure was 978 mb or 28.88 inches of mercury.

Ernesto will travel northeastward across the northern Atlantic today, then pass near or east of Atlantic Canada on Monday. On its trek northeastward, Ernesto will generally maintain its intensity, possibly even slightly intensifying into a Category 1 hurricane again before increasing wind shear impacts the storm. It will remain well offshore from the U.S. East Coast. However, residents of the Eastern Seaboard would be wise to keep an eye on this storm over the next few days as high surf and rip currents are expected.

This tropical season is already off to quite a start. Hurricane Beryl was the earliest-forming Category 5 hurricane on record before slamming the Texas coast with strong winds and heavy rainfall. More recently, Hurricane Debby made landfall last week along the Florida Gulf Coast and then again in the Carolinas, bringing 20 to 30 inches of rain to the Carolinas and severe flooding as far north as the Northeast U.S. and southeastern Canada. WeatherBug partnered with meteorologists from AEM have called for an extremely active Atlantic hurricane season. We have predicted 20 to 26 named storms, nine to 13 hurricanes, and five to seven major hurricanes.

With the tropical season heating up, it’s time to prepare for the season. Start organizing portable phone chargers, a radio, batteries, non-perishable food, water, and blankets into an evacuation kit now. While fair weather is in your area, take the opportunity to scout out multiple evacuation routes from your area in case your preferred route is traffic-jammed or blocked.
