A strong coastal storm will linger near Cape Cod today, keeping strong winds and some rain in the region through today.
The mature disturbance will linger near the New England coast for much of the day today before pulling away from the region tonight into Thursday. As a result, eastern Long Island, southeastern New England, and the coastal areas of northern New England will be dealing with 40-60 mph gusts through this afternoon, with the strong winds continuing on Cape Cod through tonight.
The strongest winds that impacted the Northeast late Tuesday through this morning generated just over a half-million power outages, most which have occurred in eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Light to moderate rain will linger across eastern New England through into the afternoon, but drier conditions move in tonight as the winds begin to subside.
New England will get a chance to dry out and repair downed utility poles on Thursday before a fresh storm system pushes into the Plains today and brings rain Friday into Saturday. Strong high pressure anchored across Canada will help generate a pressure gradient that will help drive breezy wind across New England, but the low pressure is not expected to strengthen to the magnitude of the current system. Therefore, winds won’t be as strong and fewer power outages are expected.
