A Slight Risk for severe weather is still active for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, but thunderstorms seem to be losing their strength as the night progresses. Heavy rain, gusty winds and isolated tornadoes have been reported throughout the day and continue to be a threat overnight.
Tornado Watches are still in effect from Northeastern South Carolina to the coastal cities such as Ocean City, Md.
Waves of thunderstorms are rolling across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. These storms have had a history of producing damaging winds and heavy rain. Five possible tornadoes have been reported, as trees have been knocked down and injuries being reported near Sydnorsville, Va. The threat for damaging winds up to 60 mph, hail and isolated tornadoes will continue throughout the rest of evening into the overnight.
The eastern and central Carolinas into south-central Virginia has had the greatest risk for dangerous storms producing quick-moving tornadoes, with multiple severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings being issued.
As if that weren’t enough, flooding has been a major concern for the Carolinas northward into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. In these areas, Flash Flood Watches have been posted for the threat of thunderstorms producing as much as 1 to 3 inches of rain in a short period of time.
If you need to do any driving today, be mindful of other drivers and be sure to maintain a safe stopping distance between vehicles. If you reach a flooded roadway, remember the saying “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Where thunderstorms threaten, be sure to understand the difference between a weather watch and a warning. A watch means that an area is being monitored for dangerous weather. A warning means that dangerous weather is imminent.
