Today's Severe Weather Outlook

Severe weather is unusual in the middle of winter, but ingredients will come together to produce stormy weather over the Lower Mississippi Valley today.

A low pressure system tracking across the Deep South will carry moisture and energy to aid in the development of severe thunderstorms tonight. A powerful line of severe storms is chugging across the Deep South along the system's cold front.

The Storm Prediction Center has overlayed a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms from far southeastern Texas to southern Mississippi. Cities include New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., and Jackson, Miss. The main threats will be damaging winds and a few tornadoes, but some large hail cannot be ruled out overnight.

A Tornado Watch is in effect for southern Alabama and western portion of the Florida peninsula. Cities include Mobile, Ala. and Pensacola, Fla.

This weather maker will also bring the possibility of flash flooding around the Ark-La-Tx region and the Lower Mississippi Valley. Heavy rain could accumulate 2 to 3 inches by daybreak today. Remember, if you approach a roadway covered in water, follow a simple motto – “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

Into today, this system will shift eastward toward the Southeast and will bring similar severe weather and flooding threats. Another Slight Risk has been issued for far southeastern Alabama, southern Georgia, and northern Florida. Thunderstorms may feature damaging wind gusts, torrential downpours, and a couple of tornadoes.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time.
