Severe Weather Outlook for Today
The “official” start to spring is still over a week away but Mother Nature will deliver potent, spring-like weather to parts of the Gulf Coast and Southeast today. Strong to severe thunderstorms will be likely from Louisiana to northern Florida.

An area of low pressure will briskly move eastward across the Southeast today. The counter-clockwise wind flow around this low will draw plenty of warm, moist air northward ahead of it while cooler, drier air is drawn south and westward following the low. Thunderstorms have already developed along the boundary where these two airmasses have collided along parts of the Gulf Coast and southern areas of the Southeast. These thunderstorms will push south-southeast for the rest of this afternoon and evening.

A Tornado Watch has been issued for southern Georgia and the Florida Panhandle into parts of northern Florida. This includes Valdosta and Savannah, Ga., and Panama City and Tallahassee, Fla.

The best chance for severe weather will be from southern Mississippi into southern Georgia and northern Florida, which are all included in a Slight Risk from the Storm Prediction Center. This includes Hattiesburg, Miss., Mobile and Dothan, Ala., Savannah, Ga., and Tallahassee, Fla. Damaging wind gusts more than 60 mph and large hail will be the primary threats with this latest round of severe weather. However, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

Some strong storms could continue to develop over central Florida on Monday as the cold front makes its way across the state. Isolated pockets of gusty winds and small hail will be possible.

Being aware of your surroundings and having a plan of action are the best ways to stay safe during severe weather events. Have multiple ways to receive warnings for your location and be sure to shelter in a basement or interior room within a well-built structure when severe weather approaches. Also remember that it is always a good idea to stay indoors during thunderstorms of any strength and that it is never a good idea to walk or drive through flooded areas.
