Tonight's Severe Weather Outlook
Active storms to rumble through the Upper Midwest tonight after an active start to the work week. The main threats will damaging wind gusts and large hail, but a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

A strong upper-level disturbance will rotate over the northern High Plains tonight, dragging a cold front across the central Plains and Upper Midwest. This boundary separates warm but dry air to the north with hot, very humid air to the south. This collision of air masses along with strong winds aloft and enough lift from the disturbance will cause thunderstorms to fire up tonight.

The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted a Slight Risk for severe weather in the central U.S. tonight. This includes eastern north-central Kansas into Nebraska, Iowa and southern Minnesota. Cities such as Norfolk, Omaha and Lincoln, Neb., Des Moines, Iowa, and Worthington, Minn. Storms will have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts of 60 to 65 mph and large hail, though an isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for parts of Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, including Russell and Concordia, Kan., Omaha, Neb., and Atlantic, Iowa.

Thunderstorms across the Ohio Valley overnight and on Monday already delivered scattered wind gusts of 60 to 75 mph which has led to numerous downed trees and powerlines. As of this morning, over 520,000 customers are without power across Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan as a result of these storms.

Being aware of your surroundings and having a plan of action are the best ways to stay safe during severe weather events. Have multiple ways to receive warnings for your location and be sure to shelter in a basement or interior room within a well-built structure when severe weather approaches.

Be sure to understand the difference between severe thunderstorm or tornado watches and warnings. When a watch is issued, then conditions are favorable for dangerous weather. When a warning is issued, it means that dangerous weather has already been observed and is imminent in your location, and you should take immediate action to protect life and property. Also remember that it is always a good idea to stay indoors during thunderstorms of any strength and that it is never a good idea to walk or drive through flooded areas.
