Snowfall Forecast Through Sunday Morning
An unlikely pairing of a coastal system and a clipper system will produce travel headaches across the Great Lakes and portions of the Northeast today and into the start of the weekend. A fresh coating of snow and blustery winds will be likely for portions of the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes as a result of these systems.

Snow continues to spread across the Great Lakes this morning as an area of low pressure fumbles out of Canada. Snow is expected to continue in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley today before shifting into portions of the Northeast later this afternoon and evening.

In this clippers wake, a swath of 2 to 4 inches of snow with up to 6 to 8 inches locally is expected across portions of Wisconsin, northern Illinois, and Michigan. This includes cities such Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wis., and Detroit.

As this clipper weakens later tonight into Saturday, lake-effect snow showers will spread across the eastern Ohio Valley into Pennsylvania as well as interior portions of the Northeast. Interior locations will generally see a coating to 3 inches of snow, but areas located closer to Lake Erie could see snow totals range between 3 to 7 inches, with isolated totals up to 8 to 10 inches possible. Cities at risk of the higher snow totals include Cleveland, and Erie, Pa., as well as Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y., and this will likely lead to slippery travel conditions.

Winter Weather Advisories stretch from northern and eastern Wisconsin into portions of Michigan, northern Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania and western New York. Further south, there are additional Winter Weather Advisories along the spine of the Appalachians in West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, extreme western Virginia and along the Tennessee-North Carolina border. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for central Wisconsin as well, which includes Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay.

In addition to the snow, gusty winds are expected to accompany this clipper system. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph can be expected for across the Great Lakes into portions of the Northeast.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of emergency. Be sure to have multiple ways to get the latest weather information from local TV, weather radio, or the WeatherBug app. With bitterly cold air in place, it is the time to check on the elderly, keep pets inside and dress in as many layers as possible to avoid hypothermia.
