Scorching February Heat Winds Down In California
February 13, 2022 at 07:28 AM EST
UPDATED By Weatherbug Meteorologist, Mark Ellinwood

California and the Desert Southwest will continue to sizzle today, with the heat dome breaking down at the start of the work week.
A stout ridge of high pressure over the southwestern U.S. is more reminiscent of a late summer or early autumn weather pattern. Hot air will continue to flow from the inland areas toward the California coast today, allowing for well above normal temperatures.
Highs will reach well into the 80s and lower 90s across southern California again this afternoon. Average high temperatures across this region are the middle 60s for this time of year, putting these highs at 20 to 25 degrees above average. Although it is a dry heat, a Heat Advisory remains active along the coast from Malibu to San Diego, and for all of Los Angeles County into the Inland Empire. Temperatures are expected to remain unseasonably warm through tonight before a change in the wind direction allows cooler air to filter into the region Monday into Tuesday.
If you plan outdoor activities this weekend, drink plenty of water and try to avoid the hottest times of the day. Also, be careful about swimming in rivers or the ocean. Despite the hot weather, ocean and river temperatures are running at their typically cool levels. This means you will still need to wear a wet suit to avoid the risk of hypothermia.
