Spring has arrived and it is time to head outside and cure some of winter’s cabin fever. The season of later sunsets and cool, sunny days is the perfect time to kick your outdoor exercise routine into high gear.

Spring weather is fickle with cold and frosty mornings turning into mild sun-filled afternoons followed by dropping evening temperatures. Passing rain showers can also make for a soggy hike or bike-ride home. Here are a few tips to help you get moving and enjoying the best spring exercise weather:
  • Check the weather— Whether you are doing an afternoon hike or a weekend mountain bike trek, always check the weather. Pay attention to temperature ranges and chances of precipitation. Northern and mountain climates can still receive snow and subfreezing temperatures, so keep that in mind while making plans.
  • Prepare and plan your route— One of the great things about exercising outdoors is the abundance of different locations and paths you can explore. If you are going to venture far away or in remote locations such as deep wooded areas or mountainous terrain, make sure you plan ahead and let someone else know your agenda. Not only will this provide you with a more efficient and prepared experience, but it will also make for a good plan for others in case of emergencies.
  • Appropriate footwear and attire— A good majority of outdoor exercises are going to be done on your own two feet. To prevent injuries and to maintain comfort, a new pair of well-fitting shoes or hiking boots is crucial. After prolonged use and discomfort sets in, footwear should be replaced. Be sure to wear layers of clothing that can be removed as the temperatures rise during the day.
  • Take Your Sunblock and use itThe spring sun, especially later in the season, can produce a wicked sunburn. Remember the April sun intensity is as strong as the early September one, so keep that in mind while applying the SPF-30 sunblock.
  • Stay Hydrated, Carry Water— Even on short walks and bike rides, carry water to stay hydrated. Muscle cramps and dehydration can occur as you perspire.
  • Go As A Group— Including friends, families and pets in a hike or bike ride will make it more fun and allow everyone to get reacquainted with nature and each other.
Lastly, you don’t need to go far or wait for the weekend to enjoy the spring weather. A stroll around the office at lunchtime or walking the dog in the neighborhood after work are great ways to sneak in more daily exercise. Just getting outside and getting moving can make a world of difference in your health.
