It’s that time of year when heavy snows and high winds can knock down power lines and leave you without power. Whether it is a short power outage or a long one, being prepared now will help you stay warm when the power is out.
  • Close blinds or curtains to keep in heat.
  • Close off unneeded rooms to avoid wasting heat.
  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Remove layers to avoid overheating, perspiration and subsequent chill.
  • Break out any blankets or sleeping bags. Pile them up to keep you warm.
  • Eat and drink. Food provides the body with energy for producing its own heat. Drink lots of water and other drinks to prevent dehydration as cold air is very dry. However, avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.
  • Use alternative heat sources, such as candles, solar heaters, wood stove, fireplace or portable generator. Make sure to keep the generator outside and away from the house.
These simple tips can go a long way to ensuring that you and your family stay warm the next time the power goes out this winter.
