Severe Thunderstorm Outlook

Storm systems moving across the Northern Tier will provide chances for severe thunderstorms in multiple regions today.

A ridge of high pressure settling over the eastern half of the county will boost temperatures across the central and eastern U.S. The northern and eastern edges of this ridge is where most of the storm development will occur this afternoon and evening.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued Slight and Enhanced Risks (levels 2-3 out of 5) from the Upper Midwest into the interior parts of the Northeast. Southern Minnesota, central to northern Wisconsin, and northern Michigan have the best chance at seeing severe storms today. This includes Minneapolis as well as La Crosse and Green Bay, Wisc. Gusty winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes will be possible in this region.

Strong gusts will be the primary concern for storms sliding across the Northeast, but some storms could also produce hail this afternoon and evening.

There is another Slight Risk in western Kansas, which includes Garden City, Liberal, and Colby. Strong downburst winds and hail will be the main threats there.

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they be issued. A "watch" means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur, and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A "warning" means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
