Severe Weather Outlook
An explosion of dangerous storms is sweeping across the Lower Mississippi Valley and the South, bringing the chance for more long-track, potentially strong tornadoes, very large hail and damaging winds.

The setup for these fierce storms is a spring storm moving across southern Plains. This system is moving northeast into the Middle Mississippi Valley tonight and the Ohio Valley on Thursday. As it moves to the northeast, it will drag a strong cold front farther east across the Arklatex, Lower Mississippi Valley and the South. This front will be moving across a very and humid airmass and rapidly developing severe storms are expected to continue along and ahead of the front.

This situation is so dangerous that The Storm Prediction Center has placed a rare High Risk of severe thunderstorms over west-central Alabama. There is also a Moderate Risk that extends further outward into eastern Mississippi. Cities included in these risk areas are Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, Ala. An Enhanced Risk and Slight Risk reaches southern Missouri, the Gulf Coast and Central Georgia as well.

Numerous severe thunderstorms have been ongoing this evening across Alabama with the history of producing destructive tornadoes. These dangerous storms are expected to continue for the next several hours before while east.

A Tornado Watch is in effect across extreme Mississippi as well as parts of Alabama. This includes key cities such as Montgomery and Birmingham, Ala.

The thunderstorms will continue into the overnight since the ingredients will remain in the Southeast.

Please be sure to have a way to receive important weather watches and warnings. Use a NOAA weather radio, check back with WeatherBug, or monitor local television forecasts for more information.

Understand the difference between a watch and a warning. A watch means conditions are highly favorable for dangerous weather, and you should have a plan in place for acting. A warning means that dangerous weather has been observed, and you need to act quickly to protect life and property.
