Severe Storms Likely Over the Mid-Atlantic This Evening

A round of strong to severe thunderstorms will rumble through North Carolina and Virginia this evening, while heavy rain develops over the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast. Dangerous winds, a few tornadoes and flooding rain will be the impacts from thunderstorms this evening.

A strengthening low pressure system moving from Ohio toward the New Jersey coast will be the catalyst for strong to severe weather. A line of thunderstorms has set up over Virginia to North Carolina, while spotty thunderstorms are present within a band of rain over northern Maryland into New Jersey. Strong winds aloft and lingering atmospheric instability are present to the east of an approaching cold front which will lead to the potential for severe thunderstorms across the Mid-Atlantic. 

The bullseye for severe weather will be over Virginia to North Carolina, where that was already some high wind gusts reports that took out power and downed trees. Threats from thunderstorms include damaging wind gusts and perhaps a brief tornado or two. Cities most at risk include Fredericksburg, Richmond and Danville, Va. Anyone from the Charlotte area to as far north as New York City should also keep a close eye on rapidly changing weather this evening.

Storms across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast tonight will be capable of produce heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding. Heavy rain will expand along the New England coast tonight and Tuesday as a strong coastal storm develops as the front pushes offshore overnight. Flash Flood Watches have been posted from Boston to New York City and coastal New Jersey, as well as along the I-81 corridor in northeastern Pennsylvania and the I-88 corridor into central New York state.

Make sure you know the difference between a watch and warning should they be issued. A watch means that the ingredients for severe weather are present, and you should have a plan in place for acting. A warning means that severe weather is imminent, and you need to act fast to protect life and well-being. Make sure to remember the phrase, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
