The next leg of the PGA tour kicks off today in La Quinta, California with the American Express 2024 Golf Tournament. We’ve got the details on what to expect in terms of weather throughout the tournament.

American Express 2024 will run from January 18 to January 21 and will rotate between three courses in La Quinta: The La Quinta Country Club, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and the Pete Dye Stadium Course. These courses are settled in the Coachella Valley of southern California, an area known for its warm and arid climate. The first two days of the tournament will follow that theme, but Saturday and Sunday leave a bit of a question mark as a large storm system approaches the West Coast.

Today will present a more or less ideal day to start an outdoor golf tournament. Players and spectators alike will be treated to a partly cloudy day with a high temperature of 73 degrees and a comfortable, light breeze. If there is any day to be outside, it is this one.

Friday will be very similar to Thursday in terms of temperature, as the high is expected to be 71 degrees. The only difference will be cloud cover, as mostly cloudy skies expected throughout the day. Still, with no rain expected, it should be a very nice day to be outside.

Saturday is when things get interesting as a cold front slams into the West Coast, bringing widespread showers to areas along and near the coast. However, due to La Quinta’s unique geography sitting in the Coachella Valley, the mountains to the west of the town will likely provide a good shield from most of the storms, keeping the area mostly dry. Though, it is possible that a sprinkle or two could slip through the shield at some point during the day, so having an umbrella on hand for Saturday may be a good idea. Otherwise, expect mostly cloudy skies with a high temperature of 68 degrees.

Sunday will also be interesting as showers continue throughout much of the Southwest and California. Like Saturday however, the prevailing storm motion will still be out of the west-southwest, meaning the mountains will still shield La Quinta from much of the precipitation. Once again though, a light rain shower may slip through the cracks and dampen the final day of the tournament. The greatest chance for rain will be in the early morning hours and then again late at night, so the timing might be such that the actual round of golf gets in between the peak chances for rain. Keeping that umbrella on hand will still be a good idea. Otherwise, expect a partly cloudy day with a high of 67.
